The general overall success rate of bariatric surgery in blood glucose regulation in Type 2 diabetes is about 85%. Much higher success rates have been shown in overweight (body mass index over 30) and new (less than 10 years) diabetic patients at age younger than 50.
In the period after the surgery, it has been stated that the high blood pressure (hypertension) and the increase of blood fat (hyperlipidemia) associated with obesity are getting improved by 60-70% and 90% respectively.
It has been estimated that the risk factors for cardiovascular disease after barıatrıc surgery regresse significantly and in 10 years the risk of coronary heart disease gets decreased by 40%
More than 70% of obesity patients have sleep apnea. In the large patient series, in 95% a partial recovery in sleep apnea and in 86% a complete recovery from sleep apnea have been observed.
After the 15-month postoperative follow-up of patients with the diagnosis of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), the rates of fatty liver (steatosis), inflammation and fibrosis have been found decreased to one-tenth of the initial level.
While the risk of a sudden death in patients living with both diabetes and obesity within 5 years was pointed to 16%, the same rate in patients who have cured diabetes and obesity surgically was 0.7%. In this respect, the relative risk reduction rate was calculated as 89%.
Rates may vary depending on the characteristics of the patients and the types of surgeries selected.
As a summary out of all this, we come to a conclusion that as a result of the metabolic surgery, complications of type 2 diabetes can be prevented, health-damaging effects can be slowed down, any unexpected disease can be put under control, and at a considerable rate, the disease can be completely eliminated.
